You have been working in the education field for 30 years. Are Nepalese schools able to adopt progressive teaching methods?

In Nepal, we are facing challenges to effectively adjust learning and progress for students based on their talents and interests. This issue is not limited to just my institute, but it is prevalent in other schools and colleges as well. We believe that adopting progressive teaching methods can help ensure equal access to education for all students and enable them to pursue their desired fields of study.

What kind of education system does today's requirement call for, as we move from traditional teaching-learning education toward progressive education?

When discussing private education, it used to be common for students to travel to India to further their studies. However, immigration control has been implemented due to the presence of private schools and colleges. The use of technology has played a significant role in improving the education system. Additionally, parents have shown their interest in progressive education. As a result, I am considering implementing progressive teaching and learning pedagogy in my institution.

During the pandemic, students' excessive use of mobile phones has become an addiction and is negatively impacting their studies. How did your institution manage this issue?

We cannot completely ignore the role of technology in our lives. Unfortunately, many children have been misusing technology and social media, leading to a lack of interest in their studies and a belief that they can simply leave the country after completing grade XII. This has resulted in a complete absence of the habit of hard work among present-day students, which we need to change. While I understand that I cannot single-handedly change the country, I am doing my best to lead by example through my institutions. We are conducting parenting programs to help parents understand the impact of their actions on their children, as we have found that some children are being victimized by their parents and teachers. Additionally, we have appointed counselors to support the mental health of our students. We have received positive responses from parents, especially those with school-level students, who are now more understanding and supportive of their child's passions and interests. I believe that we need to establish separate schools based on the interests of students, such as singing, athletics, dancing, and other areas. This will help students explore their interests and talents in a supportive and nurturing environment.

What are the respective responsibilities of parents and schools in ensuring that students receive a high-quality education?

Schools and colleges should align themselves with the values and norms of society. We are witnessing a disturbing trend of young students taking their own lives. While some may point fingers at schools, it's important to acknowledge that parents also play a crucial role in their children's mental well-being. The foundation of a child's morality is laid at home before they even step foot in a school. Therefore, we urge parents to prioritize spending quality time with their children and instilling strong values in them at home.

What are some regular habits that students can develop to stay on track with their studies?

Students should pursue their interests and study the subjects they are passionate about. The role of parents in shaping the character of their children is crucial and cannot be ignored. Many students face undue pressure and become victims of blame games. Therefore, students need to understand that high grades do not determine their worth. Rather, they should choose a field of their interest and put in their best efforts to achieve success.

As a principal and teacher, what type of education do you believe is necessary for students based on your experience?

The trend of brain drain continues to pose a challenge for government and educational institutes. The excessive use of mobile phones during the pandemic has harmed students. Nowadays, students seem to be more involved in extracurricular activities like athletics, singing, and dancing rather than focusing on their studies. Based on my experience, I believe that education should be more than just acquiring knowledge. It should be about developing skills, shaping attitudes, embracing culture, and leveraging technology.

You were the immediate past president of HISSAN Kathmandu. Currently, there is a lack of coordination between local government and educational institutions. What solutions do you suggest?

As per the 2072 B.S. constitution, all rights and responsibilities related to school-level education have been given to the local government. However, there have been instances where local government officials have misused their power and made impractical policies to discourage private schools and colleges. This issue needs to be addressed by the central government. Instead of exerting control over unnecessary matters, local government officials should focus on improving the standards of government schools to attract more students.

What messages would you like to convey to students and parents?

I urge all students to identify their goals and pursue their interests. Morality, hard work, knowledge, and discipline are the keys to success. Students should cultivate patriotism and I implore parents to instill a sense of national pride in their children. As the 2080 session ends, I encourage all students to start the new session with renewed energy and a strong work ethic. Best wishes for a Happy New Year 2081.
