The Choice of Courses should Follow Interest, not the Pressure of Peers and Guardians

Jayaram Wagley is a Member of HISSAN, Bagmati Province and Executive Chairman, Miniland English High School (+2). He holds the experiences of teaching, administrating an institution and leading an organization for several years. He is one of the crucial academic ideologue of HISSAN, Bagmati Province. College Readers caught up with him for a brief conversation. Excerpts:

Can you describe the mission and vision of your institution and how do you plan to achieve them?

Our mission is to provide quality education with good moral values to all the students from PG to Grade 12. We try to provide them a safe, respectful and inclusive environment so that they can take a path of life-long learning process. Our vision is to make a decent school community where all the students feel loved, respected and encouraged to develop to their fullest potential. To achieve them, we work as a team and our faculties really work hard to produce the best possible results.

How has your experience as a chairman evolved over the years and what have been some of your most significant achievements?

I have been working quite hard from the early morning till the evening. We have quite a big experience up to SEE level and we have produced only a few batches of students of +2 level. Due to the hard work and dedication, our school has been able to grab couple of education awards and our students are also able to receive different sorts of awards in various competitions. The number of students is also increasing when compared to the previous years. Moreover, as always, we are producing the disciplined students for further studies.

How do you prepare students to meet the demands of 21st century workforce, and what skills and competencies do you believe are most essential for success?

We try to give them various techniques so that they can think critically and creatively and their voice has to be heard. We are following the modern ways of teaching methods and our students are exposed to technology based teaching procedures. We focus on project works, practical teaching methods, etc. In my opinion, the students have to be taught and develop collaboration skills, problem solving skills and technology skills to get success. The tradition teaching-learning process will take the students to nowhere.

As HISSAN Bagmati Province is a newly formed social organization, what essential things do you observe to make it stronger and more successful?

As I have been newly appointed as a member of HISSAN Bagmati Province, I am quite aware of the activities organized by HISSAN. I have found that the roles and functions of HISSAN are not clearly distinct in district, province and central level. So it has to be clearly differentiated since it may create confusion. It has to work for the welfare of the students and education institutions. It also needs to suggest the Bagmati province government while making the education policies.

What would you suggest for the SEE graduates for the wise selection of subjects and colleges?

At first, I would like to wish the SEE students for the best GPA. The students need to choose the subjects in which they will enjoy and are really interested. Their choice should not be on the pressure of their peers and guardians. You need to consider the fees and also the facilities required and provided to you for your study in +2 level.
