Quality human resources and physical infrastructure are the driving forces behind U-TEC's success

United Technical College, a well-established institution located outside the capital city of Kathmandu, specializes in Engineering and Technical Education. The college offers undergraduate programs in Civil, Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering, as well as an MSc in Construction Management, all affiliated with Pokhara University.

Principal Prof. Dr. Keshab Datt Awasthi emphasizes the importance of expanding students' horizons, fostering their skills, and guiding them towards achieving excellence. Prof. Awasthi discusses strategies to improve the practical aspects of the programs and increase their market appeal. Here are some highlights from the discussion:

A severe shortage of qualified and professional human resources to teach in BE engineering has frequently been experienced in the areas of Chitwan, how have you been able to operate the Master's degree programs?

We have managed human resources in two ways: first, by upgrading and strengthening our permanent faculty; and another, by collaborating with Pokhara University (PU) and Tribhuvan University (TU). We collaborate with the experts of TU in Social Sciences and Management related subjects. Similarly, we manage the technical human resources as visiting professors from Pokhara University. Our prime concern is to focus on research and publication. So, we upgrade our faculties through their involvement in research and publication, too.

United Technical College offers BE Civil, BE Electrical and Electronics, BE Computer, and MSc Construction Management programs. Similar programs are also available in other colleges nearby. What unique features attract students to United Technical College?

The first reason; we offer Master’s and Bachelor's degree programs ensuring high-quality education by experts. Second; we provide students with physical infrastructure including a well-equipped lab and a well-stocked library. Third; the college maintains an academic environment with qualified faculty and fourth; the management team is visionary with strong team spirit. Fifth; we focus on knowledge and skill transformation using a blended teaching model.

We provide individual care, focus on practicality, and explore hidden talents. Every student is unique with their own talents. As educators, we nurture their talents, helping them excel. Students become skilled and confident communicators. Guest lecturers deepen knowledge. We prepare them for the global market, providing real-world experience and professional skills. Our college offers advanced facilities for curricular and extra-curricular activities. Enrich your career by studying with us.

There is a high dropout rate in engineering education. What are the reasons behind this?

I don't blame any specific factor. Everyone shares equal responsibility. In my view, the primary cause of the high dropout rate is the misuse of modern technology like Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and so on. Many students enter engineering education without adequate preparation and determination. Similarly, due to inadequate supervision and residential support, many students prematurely end their studies.

What message would you like to convey to the + 2 pass-out graduates?

Firstly, I suggest that students who have completed their 12th-grade education pursue their undergraduate studies in Nepal. Studying in Nepal can help students become more familiar with our society and culture. Secondly, it is crucial for students to choose the right career path and pursue it with sincerity. I encourage students to select a field of interest and then choose a suitable college that can help them achieve their career goals. For those interested in IT and Engineering Education, I recommend United Technical College as the best place to study.
