Dr. Sharada Poudel is a prominent Nepalese scholar with a PhD in Buddhist Philosophy. For the past ten years, she has been a permanent faculty member of the Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU), while also having served on the Academic Council of the University. In addition to her academic roles, she has held a series of administrative positions, such as serving two terms on the Executive Council of the LBU, and one term as the Deputy Campus Chief of LBU’s Central Campus. She currently presides over the Central Library as the Library Chief.
Her literary contributions include a number of books as well as articles and research papers published in both national and international journals. Dr. Poudel's academic influence extends to teaching and presenting research papers at conferences in Nepal, India, China, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Her multifaceted roles and significant academic contributions underscore her expertise and commitment to the field of Buddhist philosophy.

Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU), from the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, Lumbini, is an autonomous and public institution of higher learning committed with the mission to educate the people of Nepal and enrich the global learning community through the application of core Buddhist values and to promote World Peace. Established by the Government of Nepal with a Parliament Act on June 17, 2004 under the concept presented by the First World Buddhist Summit held in Lumbini. The constituent campuses of the University and the Central Administration Offices are located in Lumbini, in the district of Rupandehi, Nepal.

Internalizing the teachings of Lord Gautam Buddha, LBU envisions for world peace, harmony and prosperity through its pedagogy and research in the areas of Buddhist Philoshphy, Literature, Education, Culture, and other subjects to enhance the cultivation of precepts and human virtues such as peace, empathy, Maitrī and compassion. Buddha’s teachings direct the humans towards achieving the ultimate happiness.  In Buddhism, development is interpreted as uplifting people in terms of spiritual and psychological needs upon securing the basic needs of a decent livelihood.  Similarly, Buddhism recognizes the importance of cultivation of human virtues as well as material development.

Who can enroll in our programs?

The courses are not just meant for monks or practicing Buddhist students; in fact, students of all social backgrounds and religions are welcome to enroll in our courses, in order to build a career through the variety of subjects offered in our institutions. 

Faculties

Lumbini Buddhist University consists of three Faculties currently; from the beginning the Faculty of Buddhist studies has been predominant as the course of Buddhist Studies is one of the fast growing multi-facet academic disciplines which has something to cater everyone from all walks of lives. Besides traditional monastic education systems, the course of Buddhist Studies has been introduced in the Universities across the globe. In the context of Lumbini Buddhist University, this discipline is taught not only at the central campus of LBU but also taught in its six  affiliated educational institutions in Nepal such as, Lotus Academic College,  Lumbini College of Buddhism and Himalayan Studies, Sugat Bauddha Mahavidyalaya, Theravada Buddhist Academy, Boudha Multiple Campus and in SIBA, Sri Lanka. The courses offered include Master’s Degrees in Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, Applied Buddhism, Buddhism & Himalayan Studies, and Buddhism and Peace Studies; PGD and Bachelor’s degree courses, along with one-year certificate-degree languages courses in Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese languages.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers programs in Bachelor and Master Levels including Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws with Honors in Buddhism (BA LLB) at its Butwal City College, Naya Gaun, Butwal, Bachelor of Rural Development at its Central Campus, Parsa Lumbini, Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM) at its Butwal City College, Naya Gaun, Butwal as well as at its Central Campus, Master of Arts in Archeology and Buddhist Sites at its Central Campus, Parsa Lumbini, Master of Arts in Museology and Buddhist Archives at Akshewsor Dham Bihar in Lalitpur.

The School of Development Studies & Applied Sciences was created in 2019 by Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU) to practically connect and contextualize the teachings of Buddha with the contemporary issues and development needs. The School has developed three master level programs: Master in Agroforestry (MAF), Master in Development Studies (MDS), and Master in Environmental Studies (MES).
