There is a misconception that schools only focus on academic progress. We are committed to changing this perception by prioritizing the holistic development of students. Our emphasis is on cultivating the skills necessary for students to become lifelong learners and global citizens. While schools play a role in knowledge construction, we also recognize the significance of developing analytical and critical thinking skills. It is essential for students to effectively communicate their thoughts and knowledge. We provide in-depth knowledge and foster constructive communication skills. Real-life learning is a key focus, encouraging students to apply their knowledge in practical situations. Our goal is to nurture responsible citizens who are spiritually aware and capable of making conscious decisions.

How have you implemented digitalization in your school classrooms?

Before the pandemic, society was unaware of the importance and uses of technology. However, our school had already recognized this significance. We had equipped our teachers with technology, which proved beneficial when the pandemic hit. By connecting with students through technology, including training sessions with certified experts, we were able to adapt smoothly. The rise of AI and new technologies signals a shift towards automation, highlighting the need for us to stay updated. Embracing technology in classroom settings, such as Google Classroom, smart boards, and projectors, has been key. Introducing video-making as a tool for student presentations has been a successful enhancement. These videos are shared online, expanding beyond traditional textbooks to provide a variety of online learning materials.

Despite the many benefits of technology, there are also some drawbacks, such as stifling students' creativity. In this regard, what challenges do teachers face?

During the early days of the internet, concerns about stifling creativity were common. New technologies often evoke fear in people. However, it is important to remember that technology lacks the emotional and social intelligence that humans have. While AI has simplified our lives, its misuse is a valid concern. Educators should assess if students rely too heavily on AI and encourage them to develop their own voices. Teaching proper AI usage is crucial. Integrating modern technology can enhance our classrooms.

What are the roles of parental and community engagement in enhancing the quality of education?

School is not a distinct entity; it is an integral part of the community. The community comprises parents, stakeholders, and others. The involvement of parents and the community is vital in education. Engaging the community fosters a collaborative approach and enriches the learning environment. Society offers diverse opportunities that should be chosen based on ethical considerations. Presently, we are closely collaborating with Budhanilkantha Municipality. We are informing our students about the ongoing initiatives within the municipality and its contributions to national development. Today's students represent the future of the nation; hence they should be knowledgeable about their country. Recently, our deputy Mayor delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of understanding politics. We observed that his speech covered most of the topics in the social studies book. We have witnessed an improvement in students' performance before and after community engagement.

These days, there is much talk about progressive teaching and learning pedagogy. Many schools have adopted it. Do you believe that progressive learning contributes to the holistic development of students?

Yes, certainly. We are transitioning from traditional teaching approaches to more progressive methods. Embracing innovative pedagogy signifies advancement. While our conventional teaching style has its advantages and disadvantages, it doesn't imply that average students in these classes are unsuccessful today. It's time to shift away from exam-focused perspectives as the demands of the present era and the market have evolved. This current generation belongs to the Alpha generation and the age of digitalization. We must shift towards practical learning and strive for global proficiency.

How much do our students globally benefit from progressive education?

As I mentioned before, our goal is not to create students who simply memorize information. Rather, we aim to cultivate essential life skills and foster competitiveness so that from an early age, they can demonstrate innovation, creativity, strong communication abilities, and critical thinking. Collaboration among students is also highly valued. Through nurturing these four key skills, I believe we are providing a forward-thinking education that benefits students on a global scale.

What messages would you like to convey to parents and teachers?

As the Principal of Imperial World School, I want to convey to all parents and students that we are catalysts for change. We comprehend the essence of both conventional and contemporary learning. It's crucial to shift our emphasis away from mere exams and grades, as skills ultimately hold the greatest significance. Embracing a global perspective while residing in Nepal is essential. Embracing change and staying current is imperative. Cultivating a mindset of perpetual learning is key. Schools and parents must work hand in hand to foster a culture of lifelong learning in children.
