Elimination of Private Education is Unlikely in Nepal

Shiva Adhikari, President of HISSAN Kathmandu, is the Founder Principal of Ed-mark Academy/College and Wisdom English Academy. He is also the Founder Chairperson of Success Academy, Safal College, and Dhading Multiple Campus. After holding the position of president of HISSAN Kathmandu, he has done remarkable academic as well as policy lobbying activities. He has expressed his plans and work done with College Readers. Excerpts:

After being actively involved in HISSAN Kathmandu for over a decade, what are the notable distinctions between the previous and current state of HISSAN?

HISSAN has expanded its presence to over 30 districts, demonstrating a wide-reaching establishment. Throughout its operations, HISSAN has consistently maintained a commitment to delivering high-quality work. Although the current committee is smaller in comparison to previous years, their effectiveness in executing their responsibilities remains noteworthy. Despite the reduced numbers, the committee continues to carry out their tasks efficiently and effectively, ensuring the organization's success and the fulfillment of its objectives. The HISSAN team has been actively engaged in numerous productive activities, making significant contributions to the field of education. One of their notable accomplishments has been the establishment and implementation of leadership training programs designed for principals, founders, and committee staff members. These training sessions have focused on equipping participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively lead educational institutions. Additionally, HISSAN has organized training workshops centered on promoting quality education and enhancing the overall educational system. To foster collaboration and exchange of ideas, residential meetings were conducted in the Sindhuli district. These gatherings provided a platform for educators to discuss pressing educational issues and devise strategies for improvement. Furthermore, on Jestha 5, 2080, a meeting was organized with the objective of discouraging students from pursuing studies abroad, emphasizing the importance of receiving education within the country. On Jestha 22, 2080, HISSAN organized an awareness program in conjunction with a marathon competition to commemorate World Environment Day. This initiative marked a significant milestone as it was the first-ever marathon program conducted by HISSAN. The event aimed to raise awareness among students about environmental issues and the importance of sustainable practices. Another notable event was the Kathmandu HISSAN Quiz held on Ashar 8, 9, and 10, 2080. This quiz witnessed participation from 64 college students, engaging them in a competitive and intellectually stimulating environment. The quiz is scheduled to be televised soon, reaching a wider audience and showcasing the academic prowess of the participating students. Overall, HISSAN's tireless efforts and diverse range of activities have undoubtedly contributed to the growth and development of the education sector, fostering leadership skills, promoting quality education, raising environmental awareness, and providing opportunities for academic engagement.

In response to the growing hostility towards private sectors from the side of the state, HISSAN has taken proactive measures to address the situation.

Personally, I hold the belief that the elimination of private education is an unlikely scenario within our nation, particularly in Nepal. It appears that even at the municipal level, decisions are being made by our Mayor without sufficient contemplation. As an example, during this educational fair, we sought permission from the Minister of Education, yet the Municipality exerted its authority and attempted to impede the fair from taking place.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by private educational institutions in navigating bureaucratic hurdles and conflicting interests. Despite the obstacles encountered, it is crucial to acknowledge that private education plays a significant role in the overall educational landscape, offering diverse opportunities and choices for students and parents alike. Efforts should be directed towards fostering an environment of collaboration and understanding between private educational institutions and government bodies. It is essential to emphasize the value and contributions that private education brings to the education sector, such as innovation, specialized programs, and increased accessibility to quality education. By engaging in constructive dialogue and advocating for the importance of private education, HISSAN and other stakeholders can work towards finding common ground and ensuring the continued existence and growth of private educational institutions, while also addressing any concerns or issues raised by the government or municipalities.

What role does HISSAN play in discouraging students from pursuing education abroad?

Although HISSAN does not hold decision-making authority, its role lies in providing counseling and guidance to the nation regarding the issues related to students going abroad for education. However, currently, HISSAN is focusing on two key areas: education and tourism. The belief held is that Nepal possesses the potential to become a captivating tourist destination with its natural beauty and cultural richness.

The assertion is made that the government lacks a visionary approach in promoting and harnessing the full potential of Nepal's tourism sector. To discourage students from seeking education abroad, it is essential to ensure that they receive a comprehensive education within the country. The emphasis is placed on providing students with education up to the bachelor's level while equipping them with the necessary skills and competencies. HISSAN is dedicated to delivering quality education, thereby enabling students to acquire the knowledge and abilities required for their future endeavors. By focusing on providing a strong educational foundation and fostering skill development, HISSAN aims to instill confidence in students and make them competitive and capable individuals.

The objective is to encourage students to explore the various educational opportunities available within Nepal, recognizing that the country has the potential to offer a robust and fulfilling educational experience. Through a commitment to delivering quality education, HISSAN aims to empower students and equip them with the skills needed to excel in their chosen fields, thereby reducing the inclination to pursue education abroad.

How should the coordination and functioning be structured between Bagmati HISSAN at the center and its respective district chapters?
I kindly urge Bagmati HISSAN to convene and organize a committee assembly, bringing together members to discuss the various educational challenges that are currently prevailing. By collectively addressing these issues, the aim is to find viable solutions and work towards their resolution in a unified manner. The proposed gathering would provide a platform for committee members to engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and share insights regarding the educational problems faced in the Bagmati region. Through open dialogue and collaborative efforts, the intention is to identify the root causes of these challenges and explore effective strategies to overcome them. Furthermore, the assembly presents an opportunity to foster a sense of unity and collaboration among Bagmati HISSAN members. By pooling their knowledge, expertise, and resources, they can collectively contribute to the development and improvement of the educational landscape in the region. It is essential that the committee assembly serves as a proactive and constructive forum, encouraging active participation and engagement from all members. By encouraging open communication, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to finding solutions, Bagmati HISSAN can work towards addressing the educational problems collectively and strive towards enhancing the quality and accessibility of education in the Bagmati region.

What message would you like to convey to the educational community?

Achieving productive and high-quality education requires the collaborative efforts of PABSON, HISSAN, and other organizations. By working together, they can create a synergy that fosters positive change in the educational system. Regular meetings serve as crucial platforms for exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and developing strategies to enhance the quality of education. These meetings provide opportunities to address challenges, identify areas for improvement, and implement effective solutions. Through collective action, these organizations can pool their resources, expertise, and experiences to implement innovative teaching methodologies, curriculum enhancements, and professional development programs for educators. By prioritizing collaboration and continuous improvement, they can create an educational environment that nurtures student growth and prepares them for a successful future.
