Dr. Rajendra KC possesses exceptional abilities, accomplishments, and a remarkable trajectory of success in various areas of his life. Dr. KC, characterized by exponential growth, continuous learning, and a relentless pursuit of excellence was born on the 20th of Ashad, BS 2024 in remote district of Dhading, Nepal. He comes from Ganga Jamuna Gaun Palika, a rural municipality situated approximately 130 km away from the district headquarters of Dhading. His birthplace, Dangsing, Phulkharka, holds historical significance as it was formerly known as "Dangsing," reflecting the charitable nature of its inhabitants and Dr. KC carries the legacy of generosity associated to the ancestral land. During his formative years, Dr. Rajendra KC resided in Dangsing, Phulkharka, where he spent 16 years of his childhood life. He received his education up to grade 9 from Shree Mandali Secondary School, laying the foundation for his academic journey. Determined to pursue further studies, he made the decision to complete his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) at Shree Bheemodaya High School, located in Arughat, Gorkha. The choice to study at Shree Bheemodaya was influenced by the predominant belief that a background in excellent education would provide a favorable pathway towards pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSc.Ag) degree at Rampur, a renowned agricultural educational institution. This 5-year program was perceived as a valuable opportunity to enhance employment prospects in the agricultural sector. Inspired by this prevailing mindset, Dr. Rajendra KC enrolled at Shree Bheemodaya and successfully obtained his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) in the year 2041 B.S.

Childhood

Rajendra KC, born into a farmer's family, had a childhood that closely resembled the experiences of children in rural agricultural households. His days were filled with working on the farmland before attending school, where the teachers, although not as effective as today's educators, provided him with education. It was only after grade 6 that Rajendra had the opportunity to learn English.

Struggle in Kathmandu for Study

Upon completing his School Leaving Certificate (SLC), Rajendra embarked on a significant journey at the age of 16 when he first traveled to Kathmandu. He initially walked to Malekhu and encountered big buses, but considering the ticket fare of Rs.10 expensive, he opted for a truck instead, unaware that it would take much longer to reach Kathmandu. It took him 1.5 days to reach the city, armed with only Rs.120 in his pocket. Rajendra's purpose for coming to Kathmandu was to pursue his higher studies.

During his first three months in the city, Rajendra received support from his two elder brothers. His aspiration was to study science and become a medical doctor. However, his brother discouraged him, advising him to return home since passing the science stream was exceptionally challenging. Driven by determination, Rajendra managed to secure admission to Patan Multiple Campus by passing the entrance exam. Excited about this achievement, he shared the news with his brother, who, once again, urged him to abandon the pursuit of science and return home. At this point, Dr. Rajendra KC decided to pursue management studies instead.

Persuading his brother to allow him to study management became one of the most challenging tasks for Rajendra. After numerous requests and relentless efforts, he finally received permission and enrolled in the Public Youth Campus to study commerce in 2042 B.S. Despite his dedication to his studies, Rajendra started working as an accountant at Trimurti Garment, near his residence, just three months after joining the campus. His commitment and diligence were recognized, as the owner permitted him to attend classes from 6 am to 10 am before starting work from 11 am to 5 pm. However, the owner eventually extended his working hours until midnight, making it difficult for Rajendra to balance his time.

Determined to seek new opportunities, Rajendra visited Singha Durbar to meet Samadhoj Bista, the Joint Secretary of Bhumi Sudhar Mantralaya (Ministry of Reforms). He expressed his desire for employment, and Samadhoj Bista suggested a position for surveyor. This led Rajendra to contact Mr. Bishnu Bahadur Karki at Topography, the Department of Survey in Minbhawan. Mr. Karki advised him to undergo an 12-month training program, which would provide a salary of NRs. 815.

Resigning from his garment job, Mr Rajendra KC declined the owner's offer to work only four hours a day for the same salary. After completing the training, he enrolled in B.Com. at Public Youth Campus. Dr. KC pursued his passion and determination and excelled in commerce studies without getting frustrated. Then, he secured a job in Department, earning a salary of around NRs.1800, which alleviated his financial concerns. He successfully completed both his B.Com and MBA degrees from Public Youth Campus.

Seeking better prospects, Rajendra left his job but faced challenges finding immediate employment. He even explored the possibility of working as a waiter, which did not work out. In his pursuit, he visited a CA office, where the owner informed him of an opportunity in the research sector, but the salary would only be Rs.1500 per month, and all research-related expenses would be his responsibility. After two or three months, Rajendra decided to leave that job as well.

Professional Journey

After completing his MBA, Rajendra KC decided to pursue a career in the INGO (International Non-Governmental Organization) sector. He reached out to Mr. Shambhu Ram Simkhada, the Treasury Administrator of the Social Welfare Council, who hailed from Dhading and had previous experience working in the United Nations. Dr. Simkhada informed Rajendra about a project called CEDPA Washington DC, specifically the health and awareness project, and offered him the position of Project Manager. Rajendra accepted the opportunity and began working with a monthly salary of Rs. 40,000 around the year 2048 B.S.

For the next six months, Rajendra stayed in Dhadingbesi and served as the project manager for 16 VDCs (Village Development Committees). During that time, he also published a book titled "Dhading Darpan," which showcased the social, economic, cultural, historical, and other attractions of Dhading.

However, after six months, Rajendra started contemplating how long he would continue working as an employee in someone else's organization. This led him to the decision of opening his own NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), named "Rural Environment and Development Association Nepal (REDA-Nepal)." With already earned capital of 2 lakhs, Mr. Rajendra KC embarked on this new venture. It took approximately two years for the NGO's proposal to be accepted.

Later, Rajendra got the opportunity to work as a project manager for the Finland Embassy project, which consisted of 106 staff members in Dhading. Their work focused on enhancing good governance in the 16 VDCs. After the project showed significant success, the ambassador offered Mr. KC all the remaining funds of the company, and Mr. KC was tasked with selecting other NGOs for funding. He accepted the offer, and during that time, Rajendra was actively involved in politics as well.

Rajendra then received an opportunity to participate on a UN project in the US. He contemplated pursuing a PhD in America, but in case that didn't work out, he planned to earn money through a 6-month visa and then pursue his PhD in India. He worked tirelessly for six months, with sleepless nights, and eventually enrolled in Atlantic International University. He traveled to Boston to commence his PhD studies and completed the PhD degree after five years.

Upon returning to Nepal, Rajendra faced a two-year struggle while establishing the SIRA-Nepal. However, due to differences in donor funding alignment, he decided to leave that organization as well. Friends suggested that with his PhD, he should consider opening a college. Rajendra took up the challenge and, with an investment of 2 lakhs each from around 30 partners, he founded Kamana International College. The college quickly gained popularity, attracting 500 students in its first year and 1100 students in the following years. Rajendra eventually left the college due to partners' interests in pursuing jobs instead of expanding the organization.

During this time, Rajendra founded the Nepal PhD Association (NPA) recognizing the significance of human capital in addition to financial capital. He served as the founder president for two terms before stepping down from the position but continued to be involved with the organization. Rajendra decided to focus solely on the academic sector and left other business ventures behind.

Motivated by his friends from Kamana International College, Rajendra accepted their request to lead and establish a new college. Despite the expensive rented building at 5 lakhs 25 thousand rupees per month, he embraced the challenge, and thus Southwestern State College was established in 2068 B.S. The college began with 129 students and has now grown to over 4000 students. Additionally, there are around 1100 students in the school and approximately 2900 students in plus-two and upper levels. The college employs 350 teaching and non-teaching staff members.

Apart from Southwestern State College, Dr. KC has established seven other organizations.

A Multifaceted Professional Life

Dr. Rajendra KC, alongside his coffee farming endeavors in Dhading, has been involved in various philanthropic and business ventures. Around 10 years ago, he founded Philosophisca Nepal, a shelter for underprivileged children where they are provided with food, education, and accommodation. Initially, Rajendra solely supported the initiative, but it has now garnered support from Finnish NGOs and INGOs, ensuring its continued operation.

During his journey, Rajendra also served as the Chairperson of Hope International College for a period of five years. However, upon the government's announcement that health and science colleges should have their own hospitals, Rajendra decided to step away from the position as medical services were not his field of expertise. The college has since been sold.

Rajendra currently holds the position of Chairperson at Hotel Budhanilkantha Heritage Ltd., a five-star hotel project that is in progress and nearing operation. In addition to his involvement in the hospitality industry, Rajendra also owns Lumbini Palace Resort, a five-star resort located in Bhairahawa, and Chairperson at Parkland Agro Tourism Pvt. Ltd. Furthermore, there are plans to establish Club Chaulani Hotel in Dhangadhi this year, and a boutique hotel in Siraha is also on the agenda.

This diverse range of endeavors reflects his commitment to various sectors, including agriculture, education, hospitality, and philanthropy.

Dr. Rajendra KC holds the position of President at the University of Three Generations (U-3G), where knowledge is shared among its members. U-3G fosters an environment where adults can contribute their expertise, knowledge, and life experiences, including both successes and failures, to benefit professionally talented individuals, working professionals, and enthusiastic young individuals seeking career development. The seniors actively collaborate, support, cooperate, and integrate with the younger generation, building networks and offering valuable guidance for their entrepreneurial endeavors.

Dr. KC has received the high-status Nepal Bidhya Bhusan Class 'A' award from the first president of Nepal, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav which reflects his academic prowess and dedication to pursuing higher education. His commitment to promoting peace and harmony globally has been recognized by earning the Peace Ambassador of Universal Peace Federation. The award Nepal Samman 2070 by Jagriti Samaj Nepal recognizes his significant impact on society and his commendable efforts in uplifting and inspiring others within Nepal. Receiving an international award Mahatma Buddha Peace Prize for outstanding service, achievements, and contributions is a testament to his dedication to peacebuilding and making a positive impact on the world stage. The ceremony held at the House of Commons in London adds even more prestige to this recognition. Dr. KC’s excellence in educational initiatives and his commitment to providing high-quality education has been foregrounded through the Best College of the Year 2022 accoladed by Nepal Education Award launched in Dubai. Kudos to Dr. KC's exceptional leadership and management skills for receiving the prestigious Peter Drucker Management Excellence Award 2023 in New Delhi from the NRI Welfare Society of India. It speaks his ability to excel in the professional domain and make a difference in the business world.

At times, he endured ridicule from others due to his limited means, which led to him purchasing the cheapest rice available in the market. There were days when he had to go hungry, often settling for only half a meal.

These experiences reflect the adversity and resilience that shaped Rajendra's life. Despite the challenges he faced, he continued to persevere and strive for a better future. Through determination and hard work, he embarked on various ventures, including coffee farming, philanthropic efforts, and business enterprises in the hospitality industry.

Secondly, a comprehensive change in the curriculum is necessary to align it with global standards and focus on practical skills and relevant knowledge, making the education provided more appealing and comparable to international standards. Additionally, adopting need-based and resource-based education models would ensure that students' individual talents and requirements are catered to, fostering their growth within the local education system. Lastly, the establishment of universities in rural areas would decentralize education and provide equal opportunities for students residing in remote regions, reducing the need to seek education abroad. These solutions collectively aim to enhance the quality and accessibility of education, encouraging students to pursue their studies within the country rather than seeking educational opportunities abroad. Efforts should be made to generate income within the country to provide more job and employment opportunities for students who have completed their bachelor's degrees. The availability of student loans can play a significant role in supporting students financially and enabling them to pursue higher education within the country. By providing accessible and affordable loans, students can overcome financial barriers and fulfill their educational aspirations without the need to seek education abroad. These solutions collectively aim to address the root causes that drive students to go abroad, by enhancing income opportunities and providing financial support, thereby encouraging them to pursue their education and careers within the country.
