There is an enlightening story of a Master’s journey into becoming a legend in Anthony de Mello’s book titled “One Minute Wisdom”. In the story, God once sought the Master’s advice. He asks the master, “I want to play a game of hide-and-seek with humankind. I’ve asked my angels what the best place is to hide in. Some say the depth of the ocean. Others say the top of the highest mountain. Others, the far side of the moon or a distant star. What do you suggest?” Said the Master, “Hide in the human heart. That is the last place they will think of!” Indeed, the temple where God dwells is, our hearts. St. Ignatius discovered this truth and it made all the difference in his life. This year Jesuit Institutions all over the world celebrate the 500th year of St. Ignatius’ conversion from a self-centered worldly man to a man for others. The journey started from his time alone in a hospital bed. Inspired by saintly people’s lives and the life of Jesus, he made an inner journey of knowing himself and knowing God. Once he discovered God’s love and mercy, he was on fire and started making differences in peoples’ lives. This journey of St. Ignatius marks a special relevance this year for we have been battered by the Covid-19 crisis and spending much of our time in isolation. It has been a time which has affected all of us in different ways and to different degrees. Some of the Covid tragedies have struck in or near our homes and in our hearts. Many in their testimonies say they have redefined the purpose of life. As a Xavierian family, let us together redefine our purpose of life. This year as we understand and meditate on the theme of the academic year, “Renewal: a Pilgrimage Within”, as St. Xavier’s College family we begin a spiritual journey; an inclusive spiritual journey as a family. Going beyond religious boundaries, we begin a new search for God within us. May this year be a year for self-discovery, renewal and transformation for all of us! May this year shine forth my true self!
